Discovering Martinique through its history (8 days / 7 nights) - Breakfast Basket

Madinina, the Flower's Island. Fancy a change of air? Fancy a change for a new South destination? Take a well deserved vacation on this beautiful island of flowers and coconut trees. This trip will provide The Traveler a total change of mood. Therefore, you will knowthe history of Martinique. This experience is offered by professionals in the tourism industry of Martinique with a typical Caribbean welcome.

The Traveler is a 7 night stay with three thematic days which will help you understand the history of Martinique.
Upon arrival at the Martinique airport of Aimé Césaire, you will be greeted by an employee of the car rental company.
This employee will give you all the necessary directions (itinerary) in order to get to your lodge.

Our host is a native of Martinique and will be there to provide you with your breakfast basket that will please your taste buds. All the products are manufactured locally. 
During this trip, you will discover the history of Martinique by visiting some important cities:

Sainte-Marie: In one day, you will have the chance to discover the history of the Amerindians and Africans on a territory of resistance, the town of Sainte-Marie is the cradle of culture in Martinique. You should know that in 1658, the French colonists drove out the Amerindians and also installed a fort dedicated to the Virgin Mary from where the origins of its name.



The Caribs (one of the original Amerindians) have left a legacy, basketry, a true artisanal production located in Morne-des-Esses. The materials and techniques are identical to those of the first inhabitants of Martinique. You will have a chance to visit this historical place. 

Afterwards, you can visit the Banana Museum. At the heart of a plantation in full swing, this place presents the history of this fruit; its origins, various species, culture, properties and culinary use. You can discover 62 species planted in a 4 hectare park. 

The museum of Rum was founded in 1981; it traces the history of agricultural rum in Martinique through a photographic exhibition showing the various stages of the production of rum, sugar cane cultivation to the marketing of this product. Set in an ancient colonial house, the museum is adjacent to the Saint-James distillery. There might be a rum tasting...

Saint-Pierre: In one day, discover the history of Saint-Pierre, the city of Art and History, and former capital of Western culture before the devastating eruption of Mount Pelée, May 8, 1902.

You will be able to see the dungeon of Cyparis: Locked up for either a bar fight or a street brawl all while being intoxicated. His cell was without windows, ventilated only through a narrow grating in the door facing away from the volcano. His prison was the most sheltered building in the city, and it was this fact that save his life the morning May 8, 1902. Severely burned, he became the main attraction of Barnum & Bailey circus, which exhibited him accross the United States of America. 

The theatre: Built in 1786, and the rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, reproduced in miniature the Grand Théâtre of Bordeaux. 

During the carnival there are organized costumed balls. There are still remains of the double monumental staircase, the vestiges of the peristyle ( a columned porch or open colonnade), some cabins and a parterre (a formal garden construction on a level surface consisting of planting beds, edged in stone or tightly slipped hedging, and gravel paths) and some parts of walls that are still standing.

The Church of fort: This was the first church on the island, rebuilt at the end of the 19th century; there are still remains of the bases and of the blocs of calcined stones. This monument was entrusted to the regional service of Archaeology.

Le Prêcheur: In one day, discover the city of Le Prêcheur (The Preacher) by its maritime facade. You have the opportunity to learn the history of the Caribbean and their tomb (the last indigenous fighters from Martinique, the Caribs, would have committed suicide by jumping from this cliff to avoid submitting to the yoke of the colonizers). 

Yole (boat) ride and contact withthe middle of the sea with the fisherman's network.

  • Greeting at the airport of Aimé Césaire by an employee of the car rental company
  • Accommodation in a furnished lodge
  • A breakfast basket containing local products: honey, chocolate, coffee, jam, tea
  • A day at sea (lunch included) and the chance to explore the city of Le Prêcheur
  • A day in Saint-Pierre, once known as an international city before the volcanic eruption
  • A day in Sainte-Marie, the capital of African and Amerindian resistance. (Today, Sainte-Marie is known as the cradle of culture in Martinique)
